Merida to Cancun
Birding and Transportation
This tour is designed for birders who wish to enjoy one final morning of birding before returning home. The experience begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel on December 6th, followed by birding at two of the most representative sites of the Yucatán Peninsula. The tour concludes with drop-off at Cancún International Airport by 3:00 p.m., allowing participants to plan their departing flights accordingly.
Pick up
All congress activities will conclude with the closing ceremony on December 5th. This tour will take place on December 6th and begins with a 5:00 a.m. pick-up from your hotel or a convenient meeting point, followed by a drive to the first birding site.
Normally, driving from Mérida to Cancún International Airport typically takes between 3.5 and 5 hours, depending on traffic and transportation conditions. In this case, we offer this journey as an opportunity to experience more of the Yucatán’s bird diversity along the way.

Birding in Chankom
Chankom, a Mayan village near Chichén Itzá, is an excellent birding destination with a mix of tropical lowland forest, open areas, and secondary vegetation that host a high diversity of species, including several Yucatán endemics such as the Rose-throated Tanager, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Yucatán Woodpecker, and Yucatán Flycatcher, along with regional specialties like the Black Catbird, Gray-throated Chat, and Yellow-lored Amazon.
Chichen Itza
After a short drive, we will combine birding with a cultural visit to Chichén Itzá, exploring its world-renowned Mayan ruins.
We will continue our birding experience with a cultural visit to Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. We will be guided by a specialist in Mayan culture while keeping an eye out for birds around different areas of the archaeological site, such as the Kukulkan Pyramid, the Ball Court, the Observatory, and the Sacred Cenote.

Drop-off
After having lunch at a local restaurant in Valladolid, we will continue the drive to Cancún Airport. Drop-off is scheduled for approximately 3:00 p.m., allowing enough time for late afternoon or evening flights.
Transportation will be provided in a comfortable, air-conditioned van, with ample space for a small group of 4 to 6 birders and their luggage. The vehicle is well-suited for long drives, ensuring a safe and relaxed journey throughout the day.
