Birding and Sunset

Afternoon birding at the Yucatan Coast

This is a half-day birding experience, held in the afternoon, for those seeking a birding experience from Mérida while still having time to attend congress activities, rest, or enjoy the city’s cultural and culinary offerings during the day.

We will depart around 2:30 pm and head north toward the Yucatan coast. Our first stop will be near coastal scrub and mangrove areas, a great habitat to look for endemic and specialty species such as the Yucatan Wren, Yucatan Gnatcatcher and Mexican Sheartail. Other birds often seen here include Yucatan Woodpecker, Orange Oriole, Mangrove Warbler.

We will then continue to the mangrove lagoons near Chuburna, where the variety of waterbirds is outstanding. We will take a boat to find American Flamingos, Roseate Spoonbills, Reddish Egret, Clapper Rail, Black-necked Stilt, and different herons, egrets, and shorebirds. Also, flocks migrating plovers, sandpipers, and terns can be observed feeding along the coast.

As the sun begins to set, we’ll enjoy the  view of flamingos flying over the lagoons with the golden light of dusk, a perfect way to end the day.
